5 Dealer Website Features That Convert More Leads

A dealer website has one job: turn a shopper who’s comparing several stores into a lead for yours. Shoppers don’t give it long. Cox Automotive found that U.S. buyers in 2025 visited 4.6 websites on average while shopping, and 59% visited a dealership website (Cox Automotive). Yours is one tab among several.

The highest-converting dealer websites aren’t the flashiest. They’re the ones that make it easy to find a vehicle, trust the details and get in touch. These five features do most of the work.

1. Fast pages on a phone

Most shoppers browse inventory on their phones, and Google ranks sites on their mobile version (Google). A vehicle page that takes five seconds to show its photos loses people before they see the price.

Google’s Core Web Vitals give you targets: the main content visible within 2.5 seconds, a response to taps within 200 milliseconds, and no layout jumping around as the page loads (web.dev). Test your vehicle pages, not just the home page, on a phone over mobile data.

2. Search that works the way shoppers shop

Shoppers filter by what matters to them: body style, price, kilometres, year, drivetrain, fuel type. Make those filters easy to reach on a phone, keep the results fast, and show price, kilometres and a good photo on every result card. If a shopper can’t narrow 120 vehicles down to six in a few taps, they’ll go back to a marketplace that lets them.

3. Vehicle pages that answer every question

The vehicle detail page (VDP) is where the decision gets made. A complete one has:

  • Lots of real photos of the actual vehicle. Cox Automotive’s research found that listings with multiple custom photos got far more clicks through to the vehicle page than listings with a single stock photo (Cox Automotive).
  • An all-in price, shown clearly. In Ontario it must include every fee except HST and licensing, and the first page a shopper sees must carry the required information (OMVIC).
  • A real description of this vehicle, not a template.
  • The details people check: kilometres, trim, key options, history report, and any disclosures such as previous rental use.

4. Easy ways to get in touch, on every page

Different shoppers want different ways to reach you. Offer them all, without making any of them hard:

  • Tap to call and tap to text on mobile.
  • A short “is it available?” form on every vehicle page. In AutoTrader.ca’s 2025 survey, 91% of shoppers who wanted to do part of the purchase online wanted to ask about availability online (AutoTrader.ca).
  • Directions and hours one tap away.

Keep forms short: name, contact details and the question. Every extra field costs you leads.

5. Online steps for the deal

Shoppers increasingly want to start the deal before they visit. In the same survey, 83% wanted to get a trade-in value online and 82% wanted to handle financing online. Cox found a gap in the U.S.: 48% of buyers wanted to fill in the credit application online, but only 33% did (Cox Automotive).

Give them a trade-in estimate request and a financing application that start from the vehicle page, then make sure a person follows up within minutes.

Measure it

Track leads per 100 vehicle page views, by source and by device, every month. If phone traffic is high and phone leads are low, start with feature 1 and 4.
